Submariner, Educator, and Community Leader
Alan Malone’s journey began in the small town of Holly Grove, Arkansas—where strong values and hard work were just part of daily life. In 1978, with a head for engineering and a heart for service, Alan enlisted in the United States Navy as a nuclear power-trained electrician’s mate. He didn’t just pass—he led the pack, graduating first in his class and earning a spot in the prestigious NROTC program.
From there, he headed to the University of Mississippi, where he earned his engineering degree and was selected—again—for the Navy’s elite nuclear power program, this time as an officer. What followed was a remarkable naval career that spanned over two decades and five submarines: Greenling, Groton, Francis Scott Key, Phoenix, and Tennessee (twice). His roles were many—Electrical Officer, Communicator, Tactical Systems Officer, Navigator, and Executive Officer on two different boats—each one sharpening his expertise and deepening his commitment to mission and crew.
Alan also earned his master’s degree in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas while serving, embodying a mindset of lifelong learning and adaptability. When the time came, he retired as a Navy Commander—decorated with two Meritorious Service Medals, four Navy Commendation Medals, and two Navy Achievement Medals.
But retirement was just the beginning of a new chapter.
Alan returned home to Arkansas and continued to serve—this time in the classroom. For eight years, he taught NJROTC, passing down his knowledge and leadership to the next generation. And when he stepped out of the classroom, he stepped right into community service.
Today, Alan serves as the Commander of the Razorback Base in North Little Rock, a passionate group of Submarine Veterans dedicated to preserving history and honoring service—including maintaining and hosting tours of the historic USS Razorback submarine. He also holds public office as the Justice of the Peace for District Five in Cleburne County, continuing his lifelong commitment to leadership and civic duty.
Alan and his wife, Wanda Moudy Malone, recently celebrated 43 years of marriage—a partnership built on shared values and steady devotion. Together, they’ve raised two children and are now proud grandparents to four.
From deep beneath the ocean to the heart of his Arkansas community, Alan Malone’s life has been defined by service, leadership, and an enduring love for home.
